As a Backend Engineer at Privy (Stripe), you design and build the backend systems that power wallets, identity, and on-chain infrastructure at scale. Privy's mission is to make privacy and user ownership the default online by building simple, flexible APIs and tools for developers to build products on crypto rails. You'll work on core abstractions and infrastructure that integrate across chains, third-party providers, and Stripe products like Treasury and Link, while solving hard technical problems and leveraging Stripe's distribution to reach customers like Ramp, Klarna, Deel, Kraken, Hyperliquid, and Fomo.

What you'll do

  • Design and build backend systems that power wallets, identity, and on-chain infrastructure at scale
  • Create platform primitives and APIs that enable teams across Privy and Stripe to build faster
  • Lead complex technical initiatives across architecture, data, and distributed systems
  • Improve the scalability, reliability, and performance of the core platform
  • Help shape technical direction through high-leverage engineering work

What you bring

  • Deep experience building and maintaining a production system at scale
  • An understanding of modern API development best practices and design
  • Experience in building data models, managing database migrations and best practices, and infrastructure configuration
  • An ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • A growth mindset, constant curiosity, and fearlessness to dive into the unknown
  • An ability to write maintainable, well-tested, modular code while remaining pragmatic about moving fast
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical documentation

Nice to have

  • Experience in an API-driven business within payments, fintech, or crypto
  • Built or contributed to open-source developer tooling
  • Published work such as open source code, talks, or blog posts
  • Experience working with blockchain protocols and designing or interacting with smart contracts
  • Experience in authentication, identity, or security

What we offer

  • Annual US base salary of $156,800-$285,600
  • Equity, company bonus, 401(k) plan, medical, dental, and vision benefits, and wellness stipends
  • In-office expectations vary by role, team, and location; most office-assigned roles expect at least 50% time in a local office or with users per month
