Legal Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer (MiCA)

Cryptonow is seeking a Legal Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer to own its MiCA license end-to-end, lead the AML function, and mature the governance framework as the company scales. You will serve as the primary regulatory contact with the FMA (Financial Market Authority) and work hands-on across regulatory filings, policy development, team leadership, and business guidance. This role is essential to ensuring Cryptonow remains compliant with EU financial regulations while supporting growth across its brokerage platform and crypto voucher card business.

What you'll do

• Own and maintain the MiCA license, ensuring ongoing compliance with all regulatory requirements and acting as the primary point of contact with the FMA on all license-related matters
• Coordinate with external legal counsel on regulatory filings, interpretations, and license conditions
• Monitor regulatory developments in MiCA, DORA, and related EU and national guidance, and assess their impact on the business
• Prepare and submit required regulatory reports, notifications, and disclosures
• Manage and oversee the AML team, ensuring the AML/CFT framework is effective and current
• Ensure ongoing compliance with AML obligations including KYC, transaction monitoring, suspicious activity reporting, and risk assessments
• Act as or work closely with the Money Laundering Officer (AMLO and Deputy AMLO) and liaise with the FMA and other authorities on AML matters
• Drive improvements to the company's governance structure, policies, and internal control framework
• Support the design and implementation of committees, reporting lines, and escalation processes appropriate for a regulated entity
• Ensure documentation such as policies, procedures, and org charts reflects actual practice and regulatory expectations
• Support internal and external audits, as well as regulatory reviews and inspections
• Manage the legal and regulatory aspects of the gift card business line, including licensing, e-money, and payment services implications
• Review contracts, terms and conditions, and partner agreements relevant to the gift card business
• Act as a bridge between business teams and legal/compliance, translating regulatory requirements into practical operational guidance
• Support new product and business initiatives with regulatory input from the outset, embedding compliance by design
• Maintain relationships with external law firms, auditors, and consultants, and manage related budgets
• Contribute to regulatory horizon-scanning and internal training on compliance topics
• Support fit and proper assessments and internal governance filings for management and key function holders
• Prepare board and management reporting on regulatory and compliance matters
• Support incident management and regulatory breach reporting where relevant
• Contribute to the company's risk management framework, focusing on compliance risk and operational risk related to regulatory topics

What you bring

• A degree in Law, Finance, or a related field
• 5+ years of experience in regulatory affairs, compliance, or legal roles within financial services, payments, or crypto-assets
• A solid understanding of MiCA, AML/CFT requirements, and Austrian and EU financial regulation
• Demonstrated experience communicating directly with regulators such as the FMA and managing outside counsel
• Team leadership experience, including managing an AML team or similar function
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with business, product, and finance teams
• Fluency in German and English
