Platform Engineer (Hybrid) 2/3 days in Chicago Office

As a Senior Platform Engineer at Maven Securities, you join the Platform Engineering team building and operating the environment for Maven's applications: 22 Kubernetes clusters across Europe, the US and Asia, all on-premises, supporting over 1,100 production deployments for 44 teams and desks. Based in our Chicago office, you work US hours with the trading desks and infrastructure teams here, collaborating with Platform colleagues in London and Asia to ensure Maven's traders and developers can deploy and operate their own applications safely and efficiently.

What you'll do

• Sit with Chicago teams to understand what they are trying to accomplish, translate messy requests into clear platform requirements, and push back when a request is the wrong solution
• Design better ways of working for teams: hosted developer environments using Coder, the path from a change to production, and templates and checks that make the safe way the easy one
• Recommend how to apply existing platform capabilities and contribute to the shared platform rather than building US-specific forks, maintaining one repository and one set of standards
• Follow through across the timezone gap so work does not stall when London has gone home
• Be available in US hours when a deployment or application misbehaves, handling incidents that cannot wait
• Work with Chicago's Linux, network and storage teams on anything that spans the hosts and the cluster

What you bring

• Around six years in a platform, SRE, DevOps or development role, with depth valued over an exact number
• Comfortable working with traders, researchers and developers: you listen to messy requests, find the actual problem, and explain proposed approaches in their terms
• Persistent follow-up skills; much of this job involves unfinished conversations across a six-hour timezone gap
• Production Kubernetes experience: you have deployed to it, debugged broken changes, and can handle incidents without waiting for someone else to step in
• Comfort with GitOps tools such as ArgoCD, Helm and Kustomize; Terraform or similar experience transfers well
• Ability to write code to automate work; you write Python most of the time, with Go also useful
• Experience building a development or deployment process that other teams then ran themselves

Nice to have

• Experience in a trading firm or another environment where the platform users are close to the business
• Judgment about when to decide locally and when to wait for the rest of the team
• Hands-on experience with hosted developer environments such as Coder, Gitpod or Codespaces
• Kubernetes on-premises or on bare metal
• Experience operating observability stacks such as Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana or OpenTelemetry
• Experience in a new or growing regional team
• Experience using AI-powered tools to improve efficiency and workflows
