As the Regulatory Affairs and Licensing Lead for Southern Africa at Tether, you drive regulatory strategy and licensing efforts across the region. You work directly with regulators, policymakers, and central banks to shape favorable regulatory environments for Tether's crypto-asset and stablecoin operations. Reporting to the Head of Regulatory and Licensing Affairs-Africa, you combine legal and regulatory expertise with a deep understanding of the Southern African crypto landscape to enable the company's business strategy.
What you'll do
- Monitor regulatory developments affecting Tether and its affiliates in the Southern Africa Region, and identify emerging risks and opportunities.
- Build and maintain active relationships with policymakers, regulators, central banks, and financial intelligence units.
- Represent Tether in regulatory consultations, workshops, industry roundtables, and policy dialogues.
- Prepare briefing papers, comment letters, and policy submissions aligned with the company's global regulatory strategy.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to shape emerging regulatory frameworks in a risk-sensitive, innovation-oriented manner.
- Conduct structured assessments to determine whether licensing or registration is required for operations in each country.
- Lead or support licensing applications end-to-end, including preparation of documentation, coordination of legal opinions, regulator communications, and post-submission follow-up.
- Provide actionable regulatory and risk insights to internal stakeholders across legal, product, compliance, risk, and commercial teams.
- Support enterprise-level planning for new products or market expansions by advising on regulatory constraints and enablers.
- Coordinate responses to supervisory reviews, information requests, and regulatory audits.
- Contribute to internal reporting and executive briefings on policy risks and the regulatory trajectory within the region.
What you bring
- Understanding of the regulatory environment pertaining to the crypto-asset and stablecoin industry in Southern Africa.
- Existing legal and/or regulatory experience applicable to the crypto or financial services sector.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage relationships and communications between internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and policy setters.
- Demonstrated comfort working across cross-functional teams and complex organizational dynamics.
- A self-starter mindset with a commitment to continuous professional development and deepening knowledge of blockchain technology and regulatory requirements.
