As a Senior Data Platform Engineer at Gemini, you'll be the SRE for our data infrastructure, responsible for the reliability, automation, and operability of our database and datastore fleet. You'll work closely with data engineering and product engineering teams to build self-service, automated foundations that let teams provision, scale, and operate their own datastores safely across relational databases, NoSQL systems, columnar stores, key-value systems, and streaming infrastructure.

What you'll do

  • Build Infrastructure as Code, CLI tools, and CI/CD-driven automation that make database provisioning, scaling, failover, and deployment self-service, consistent, and repeatable across environments.
  • Develop deep operational expertise in relational database systems such as Amazon Aurora and PostgreSQL, including replication topologies, failover, backup/recovery, and query and engine-level performance tuning.
  • Extend operational rigor to the rest of the datastore fleet - document stores, key-value systems, and columnar systems - applying the right paradigm to the right workload and building common tooling and guardrails across all of them.
  • Define and track SLOs and error budgets, build proactive monitoring and alerting, implement high-availability architectures, and participate in the on-call rotation to troubleshoot and resolve production issues quickly.
  • Collaborate with data and product engineering teams to integrate with upstream and downstream pipelines via message queues like Kafka, ETL workflows, and processing frameworks.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks at both the query and infrastructure levels across database engines, and establish alerting, observability, and incident response procedures that reduce mean time to recovery.
  • Continuously identify and automate away repetitive operational work, and contribute to shared documentation, incident retrospectives, and platform playbooks to improve team effectiveness and reliability.

What you bring

  • 5 years of experience in infrastructure, SRE, or database operations.
  • Deep, specialist-level experience managing and scaling relational databases including PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, or similar systems, with expertise in replication, failover, backup/recovery, and query and engine performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated SRE mindset with experience building automation, self-service tooling, and guardrails that eliminate manual, repetitive database operations.
  • Hands-on production experience with at least one non-relational paradigm such as NoSQL, columnar, document, or key-value systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and services such as AWS RDS, Redshift, EMR, Google BigQuery, or Databricks.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform.
  • Proficiency writing scripts, CLIs, or services in languages like Python or Go.
  • Understanding of CI/CD, observability tooling, SLOs/error budgets, and incident response in production environments.
  • Experience integrating with data pipelines and real-time messaging systems like Kafka or Kinesis.
  • Comfort participating in on-call rotations and owning uptime and recovery responsibilities across multiple database technologies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across infrastructure, data, and product teams.

What we offer

  • Base salary range of $126,000-$180,000 in the State of New York, plus discretionary annual bonus and new hire equity grant
  • Comprehensive health plans
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Paid parental leave
  • Flexible time off
  • Hybrid work approach at hub offices in the United States, with remote options depending on location; all employees required to onboard in-person at an office location
