As Senior Legal Counsel, Product at TRM Labs, you serve as a primary legal partner for the Product and Engineering organizations. You advise on the legal implications of product decisions from conception through launch, with particular focus on how TRM collects, uses, and delivers blockchain data and builds AI-powered features. This high-autonomy, high-impact role sits at the intersection of legal, product, and business strategy, and you report into the Assistant General Counsel.
What you'll do
- Serve as legal partner to Product and Engineering, advising on the legal implications of product decisions from conception through launch across TRM's product portfolio.
- Advise the Blockchain Intelligence and Data teams on data collection methods and practices, data sourcing and licensing, and the permissible use of first- and third-party data.
- Counsel on the development and deployment of AI/ML features, including model training, data inputs and outputs, transparency, and emerging AI regulatory requirements.
- Advise on intellectual property matters relevant to the product, including ownership, licensing, and open-source use.
- Draft and refine product-facing legal terms, including terms of service, acceptable use policies, data terms, and customer-facing product documentation.
- Partner closely with Privacy Counsel on the privacy and data-protection implications of product specs, technical architectures, and data flows, with an eye toward legal risk, data minimization, and regulatory compliance.
- Identify legal and regulatory risks in proposed product features and recommend practical mitigations that preserve product momentum.
- Build scalable legal frameworks, playbooks, and self-service resources so Product and Engineering teams can move quickly with legal clarity.
- Collaborate with other members of the Legal team on regulatory matters, commercial agreements, and special projects as needed.
What you bring
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.
- 6 to 8 years of legal experience at a reputable law firm and/or in-house at a technology company, with substantial focus on product counseling.
- Demonstrated experience advising Product and Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle, ideally for data-intensive or AI-powered products.
- Working knowledge of the legal issues that shape technology products: data use and licensing, intellectual property, AI/ML, consumer-facing terms, and how privacy frameworks such as GDPR and CCPA/CPRA intersect with product decisions.
- Strong commercial instincts and understanding of the business context behind legal questions, with the ability to give advice that helps teams make decisions rather than avoid them.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, cross-jurisdictional environments where the right answer is not always obvious, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Clear, direct communication skills that translate legal complexity for non-lawyer stakeholders, with executive presence to engage senior stakeholders, external partners, and outside counsel.
- Comfort with AI tooling and integrating it into legal workflows.
Nice to have
- Experience advising companies that serve government or financial institution customers.
- Familiarity with blockchain, cryptocurrency, or fintech.
