Senior Post-Quantum Cryptography and Quantum Computing Engineer
What research roles in crypto pay
45 salaries · our own dataThis role pays $114k-$138k, below the $145k median for research roles in crypto on this board.
As a Senior Post-Quantum Cryptography and Quantum Computing Engineer at Greenbrier Government Solutions, you will help the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs prepare for the transition to post-quantum cryptography while protecting today's systems. This full-time role requires someone who can work at the algorithm and implementation level, then communicate migration risk and priorities to program and executive leaders.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain an enterprise cryptographic inventory covering algorithms, protocols, libraries, certificates, keys, PKI dependencies, products, interfaces, and data-protection use cases.
- Assess quantum exposure and prioritize systems and dependencies using data sensitivity, required protection lifetime, exploitability, modernization timing, and mission impact.
- Develop practical post-quantum migration roadmaps, transition patterns, crypto-agility requirements, implementation guidance, test plans, and exception criteria.
- Evaluate quantum-resistant algorithms and implementations against NIST standards, including FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205, as well as applicable federal and industry guidance.
- Model and test classical and quantum attack considerations using appropriate simulation tools and programming frameworks.
- Review RSA, AES, PKI, TLS, key-management, signing, and data-at-rest or data-in-transit implementations for modernization needs and interoperability risk.
- Work with architecture, application, cloud, network, identity, data-protection, supply-chain, and acquisition teams to sequence migration with other planned change.
- Prepare policy inputs, decision papers, technical briefs, and executive summaries that explain quantum risk without overstating certainty.
What you bring
- At least 10 years of IT experience, including at least 5 years of quantum-computing and cryptography work at a large corporation or government agency comparable in size or scope to GSA, IRS, DoD, or VA.
- Knowledge of quantum mechanics, quantum information theory, and quantum algorithms such as Shor's and Grover's algorithms.
- Experience with quantum programming languages or frameworks such as Qiskit, Cirq, Quipper, or the Microsoft Quantum Development Kit.
- Strong knowledge of cryptographic protocols and technologies, including RSA, AES, and public key infrastructure.
- Experience with post-quantum cryptography, quantum-resistant algorithms, and NIST or ISO/IEC cryptographic standards, including ISO/IEC 19790.
- Proficiency in Python, C++, or Java for implementing and testing cryptographic algorithms, plus experience with classical and quantum simulation tools.
- Experience developing PQC migration strategies, assessing cryptographic inventories, identifying migration priorities, and explaining quantum risk to nontechnical leaders.
- Experience providing policy and guidance input aligned with NIST PQC standards, including FIPS 203, 204, and 205.
- A Bachelor's degree in business administration, business management, cybersecurity, computer science, information systems, information assurance, information security, information resource management, or a related field.
- One or more of the following certifications: IAT III, IAM III, or IASAE III.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with cryptographic discovery, certificate or key-management platforms, hardware security modules, crypto bills of materials, or algorithm-agility programs.
- Experience planning cryptographic modernization across hybrid cloud, legacy systems, medical or specialized devices, and third-party products.
- Federal cybersecurity architecture, RMF/ATO, or VA experience.
