Senior Software Engineer, Payments

As a Senior Software Engineer, Payments at Ripple, you'll develop enterprise-level payment applications that enable FinTech companies and banks to settle cross-border payments instantly, securely, and efficiently. You'll collaborate with a team of engineers to prototype and implement solutions for sophisticated software problems, while providing mentorship and technical guidance. Working closely with product, legal, and business development teams, you'll ensure your design decisions align with the organisation's strategic goals.

What you'll do

• Build highly scalable and performant enterprise software for payment systems
• Design and deliver complex features within large-scale systems in complex, regulated environments
• Develop and operate modern, cloud-native, highly-available distributed systems
• Design APIs with a focus on clear, reusable service contracts (REST and/or gRPC)
• Navigate and reduce technical debt while driving significant business value and managing feature-level migration efforts
• Own technical delivery for complex features and influence cross-team decisions
• Provide mentorship and insights to the engineering team, serving as a go-to resource for questions
• Encourage engineering standard processes across the team and department

What you bring

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with a deep focus on backend systems
• Deep, hands-on experience building and operating modern, cloud-native, highly-available distributed systems
• A deep understanding of distributed systems architectures, trade-offs, and challenges as they relate to payment transactions
• Proven track record designing and delivering complex features within large-scale systems in complex, regulated environments
• Strong skills in API design and integration (REST and/or gRPC)
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS)
• Excellent understanding of Java and its ecosystem (threading, concurrency, etc.)
• Ability to tactically navigate and reduce technical debt
• Strong technical ownership skills with demonstrated ability to own technical delivery and influence decisions
• Ability to work openly and collaboratively with a diverse team

Nice to have

• Experience with Java and Spring Boot
• Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, SNS/SQS, etc.)
• Background in other robust backend stacks such as Go, Kotlin, C#, Python, or Rust
