Senior Software Engineer - Rust - Consumer

As a Senior Software Engineer on Kraken's Consumer team, you own the architecture and delivery of customer-facing Rust backend services powering trading, payments, and crypto experiences. You set technical direction for Consumer applications-a suite of products designed to make it simplest for customers to interact with Kraken and onboard the next 100 million people to crypto. You combine extreme attention to detail, a passion for world-class user experiences, and the judgment to ship fast without compromising quality.

What you'll do

• Own the architecture and delivery of customer-facing Rust backend services powering trading, payments, and crypto experiences, making design calls on systems that will outlive individual features
• Take ambiguous, multi-quarter problems from concept to shipped and measured, breaking them down so the team can move in parallel with you
• Own features end-to-end across backend and frontend boundaries, raising the bar on what end-to-end ownership means for customer experience and product outcomes
• Partner with product leadership to shape the roadmap for your product area, bringing engineering insight that influences what gets built and owning the results and metrics that follow
• Drive cross-team initiatives spanning Kraken's trading infrastructure, platform, and other product teams, building relationships and technical alignment to land them
• Mentor mid-level engineers, review designs before code, unblock people quickly, and establish patterns and standards that make the next feature easier to build
• Use AI extensively to amplify scope and speed, moving from manual code writing toward orchestrating AI and validating implementation, and help the team adopt the same approach

What you bring

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Rust proficiency across network services, asynchronous code, and distributed systems design including RPC protocols, Kafka, and event-driven architectures
• A track record of owning systems, not just features, with proven ability to make architectural decisions in production and explain the tradeoffs you would make differently now
• Product engineering mindset with experience shipping features from problem definition through implementation, launch, and user impact measurement, influencing what gets built and what gets cut
• Demonstrated impact through mentoring, design review, technical writing, or setting standards that changed how a team worked
• Experience driving work that spans teams or organisations where alignment and sequencing were as challenging as the code itself
• An AI-first development approach where AI is already meaningfully incorporated into your workflow for coding, understanding unfamiliar codebases, crossing technical boundaries, and validating implementations
• Ownership mindset with collaborative spirit, personally driving features end-to-end, working across backend and frontend boundaries, and operating outside technical silos
• Openness to how the engineering profession is evolving because of AI, prioritising shipping valuable products over manual code writing

Nice to have

• Full-stack experience including React, TypeScript, or other frontend frameworks, demonstrating cross-boundary collaboration mindset
• Cryptocurrency or blockchain domain knowledge
• Experience building and scaling products at consumer-focused technology companies at meaningful user scale
• Experience introducing AI tooling or workflows to an engineering team
