Software Engineer, Control Plane

As a Software Engineer on Conduit's Control Plane team, you own the coordination layer of the Conduit Platform: the services that provision, update, and retire everything customers run, meter what those products consume, and give both customers and your own team a trustworthy picture of what is actually running. You'll work on a small, entirely senior team with unusual influence, where your design decisions become the architecture. The core work is building a lifecycle service that observes what's actually running and reconciles toward the desired state, treating each product as opaque so new product types can be onboarded through schema rather than code changes.

What you'll do

• Own the interfaces other teams build against, including lifecycle operations, usage reporting, and schema contracts, plus how they version and migrate as they evolve
• Build lifecycle as a service: a single, well-defined interface for provisioning, updating, repairing, and retiring what customers run, backed by reconciliation against observed state
• Design schema-driven, product-agnostic systems that move product-specific knowledge out of code and into contracts the service interprets at runtime
• Own a product-agnostic path for metering what customers consume and reporting it to billing systems, where correctness has direct financial impact
• Build internal tooling and admin surfaces that let your own teams operate the platform through the control plane's abstractions, partnering with UI engineers on the surface itself
• Integrate systems that don't fit together on their own, including third-party billing and partner integrations
• Drive cross-functional coordination when the control plane is the shared point of integration
• Improve the tooling and process that keep the platform maintainable and reliable
• Participate in the team's oncall rotation, covering the control plane services you own

What you bring

• 5+ years building and operating production backend systems
• Systems breadth: you reason across several interacting systems at once, understand how they fail, where the seams belong, and how they stay consistent
• Experience designing APIs and contracts that other teams depend on, including versioning, backward compatibility, and deprecation strategies
• Comfort with asynchronous and event-driven systems: idempotency, retries, partial failure, and eventual consistency
• Experience debugging complex issues across the stack (networking, performance, data integrity) with good instincts for security boundaries
• Self-directed approach to ambiguity, able to take a loosely-defined problem and drive it to done
• Ability to become productive in an unfamiliar language quickly (the team uses Go today)

Nice to have

• Production Go experience
• Experience building reconciliation or controller-pattern systems such as Kubernetes operators, Terraform providers, or deployment control planes
• Work with schema or config-as-data systems like CUE, JSON Schema, or protobuf, and hands-on experience with schema evolution and migration
• Metering, usage reporting, or other systems where correctness carries financial consequences
• Built internal tools for expert operators
• Crypto or web3 background (genuinely not required; it's a web2 stack in service of web3 technology)
