Software Engineer, Cryptography

As a Software Engineer, Cryptography at Robinhood, you join the Cryptographic Services & Infrastructure team to secure and manage cryptographic keys and enable engineering teams to safely leverage core capabilities like encryption and decryption. You will help build and operationalize Robinhood's new in-house card-processing service, a critical initiative that brings core capabilities in-house and offers meaningful ownership across software, infrastructure, security, and operations. While prior cryptography or security experience is highly preferred, we welcome strong engineers with a passion for security to learn and grow their skills on the job.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and maintain production services and infrastructure supporting key management, encryption, and decryption functions.
• Help architect, launch, and scale Robinhood's new in-house card-processing environment to protect sensitive card, financial, and tax-related data.
• Write clean, maintainable production code and build operational tooling across software, infrastructure, and security controls.
• Collaborate with internal engineering teams to support migrations, drive adoption of shared cryptographic capabilities, and ensure safe system design.
• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to maintain high availability, security, and operational reliability as processing volume grows.

What you bring

• Experience building, operating, or supporting production services, distributed systems, or infrastructure.
• Proficiency writing production code in at least one modern programming language such as Python, Go, Java, C#, or C++ with a strong ability to reason about complex systems.
• Comfort working across multiple technical domains, including software development, infrastructure, and operational reliability.
• Clear and concise communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to explain technical decisions and proactively collaborate when facing challenges.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn security engineering principles and participate in a light on-call rotation.

Nice to have

• Prior experience in site reliability engineering (SRE), platform engineering, or cloud security.
• Familiarity with key management, secrets management, or core cryptographic concepts such as symmetric encryption or public and private key pairs.
• Experience handling sensitive financial, payment, or card data in regulated environments.
• Background in supporting internal customer migrations or driving platform adoption across engineering teams.

• Base pay range dependent on location: $166,000-$195,000 USD (Menlo Park, CA; New York, NY; Bellevue, WA; Washington, DC), $147,000-$172,000 USD (Denver, CO; Westlake, TX; Chicago, IL), or $130,000-$152,000 USD (Lake Mary, FL; Clearwater, FL; Gainesville, FL), plus bonus opportunities and equity.
