Software Engineer II - Blockchain

As a Software Engineer II - Blockchain at Mastercard, you join the Blockchain and Digital Assets Engineering team to design, develop, test, and support Ethereum/EVM and Web3 solutions. You'll work alongside experienced engineers in a highly collaborative Agile environment, contributing to enterprise-grade applications with a focus on scalability, security, reliability, and performance. The team focuses on adopting blockchain technology to bring innovative payment solutions to market, with opportunities to work alongside cutting-edge AI tools and agentic systems. This is a hybrid role based in Arlington, VA, requiring three days per week onsite.

What you'll do

• Develop, test, deploy, and maintain blockchain applications, smart contracts, and Web3 integrations within the Ethereum/EVM ecosystem
• Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and product teams to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable solutions
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute ideas to address business and technical challenges
• Translate business requirements into high-quality code aligned with engineering standards and best practices
• Participate in code reviews, testing activities, and development processes to ensure software quality and maintainability
• Work closely with product, compliance, security, and engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, test, and production environments
• Contribute to improving engineering processes, automation, tooling, and development practices
• Develop and support applications running in cloud-native, containerized environments
• Follow secure coding practices and operational excellence standards throughout development and delivery

What you bring

• Experience as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, or similar engineering role
• Experience developing applications using Ethereum/EVM and Web3 technologies such as ethers.js, web3.js, or similar frameworks
• Working knowledge of Solidity and experience developing or maintaining smart contracts
• Understanding of blockchain fundamentals, including transactions, wallets, gas concepts, and common security considerations
• Familiarity with smart contract development frameworks such as Hardhat, Foundry, or similar toolchains
• Knowledge of software engineering principles, object-oriented programming, and modern development practices
• Experience with programming languages such as Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar technologies
• Familiarity with source control systems such as Git and collaborative software development practices
• Experience building or maintaining automated unit and integration tests
• Exposure to containerization technologies such as Docker and cloud-native development concepts
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and contribute effectively in a fast-paced Agile environment
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
• Commitment to code quality, maintainability, security, and continuous improvement
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to have

• Experience with enterprise blockchain platforms such as Hyperledger Besu, Quorum, or Canton
• Familiarity with Layer 2 scaling technologies, including Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism
• Knowledge of smart contract security practices and common vulnerability patterns
• Familiarity with non-EVM blockchain ecosystems such as Solana
• Experience with Java and frameworks such as Spring or Spring Boot
• Familiarity with TypeScript and frontend frameworks such as React or Angular
• Exposure to AI-powered developer tools, LLM integrations, or agentic development frameworks
• Experience developing applications in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
