Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile

As a Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile at Coinbase, you will lead the App Infra team's greenfield native mobile app rewrite. You are replacing the existing React Native app with native Swift and Kotlin builds, using AI-driven agentic workflows to translate and rebuild core surfaces for millions of customers. Your technical direction will shape how the team works, setting the bar for quality and translating organizational strategy into execution as product teams adopt the native platform.

What you'll do

• Own end-to-end architecture and delivery of core native app surfaces in Swift and Kotlin, establishing constrained architecture and compile-time boundaries that enforce strict quality standards across the team's codebases.
• Lead the agentic code translation workflow, building high-quality automated systems for the team's recurring migration work and deciding what gets automated versus what requires human review in the translation pipeline.
• Own developer experience for the native codebase by improving build speeds, local development workflows, and CI/CD reliability, and by defining the architectural patterns and documentation that make native mobile development at Coinbase a world-class experience.
• Shape the dual-app agentic synchronization strategy during the transition, prioritizing high-impact outcomes and designing the daily agent automations and human review processes that keep native and React Native codebases in sync.
• Become a leader throughout Coinbase's mobile community, defining best practices, mentoring L3-L5 mobile engineers across teams, and fostering connection and support across all mobile engineers.

What you bring

• 8+ years of iOS or Android mobile software engineering experience in Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android, with working proficiency in the other platform and willingness to develop cross-platform fluency as this team owns both iOS and Android.
• A track record of shipping high-quality mobile applications at scale with ownership of architecture decisions, performance budgets, and release quality, where outcomes would not have happened without your direct involvement.
• Deep understanding of mobile performance optimization, including cold start, frame stability, scroll jank, and time to interaction, with experience profiling and tuning across device tiers including low-end Android.
• Demonstrated ability to translate organizational strategy into team-level technical execution, build alignment across cross-team and cross-functional partners, and secure commitment on migration timelines and quality standards.
• Experience with AI-assisted code generation or LLM-driven development workflows, with demonstrated judgment on what to automate and what requires human review.
• Experience improving developer experience through build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and release tooling, with improvements adopted beyond your immediate team.
• You use generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable gains in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
