Transaction Monitoring Analyst - (100% remote Worldwide - LATAM OR APAC timezone)

As a Transaction Monitoring Analyst at Bitfinex, you will safeguard the integrity of the platform by identifying, investigating, and mitigating financial crime risks across both fiat and cryptocurrency transactions. Working within the Compliance team, you will analyze transaction monitoring alerts, assess unusual account activity, and investigate potential money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions, and fraud-related risks using a risk-based approach. You will collaborate closely with AML Investigators, Product teams, and Compliance leadership to ensure timely escalation of high-risk cases and contribute to regulatory reporting and process improvements.

What you'll do

• Develop and implement transaction monitoring algorithms to monitor for anti-money laundering, terrorism financing, sanctions and other compliance risks, enabling controls to be implemented to mitigate detected risks using a risk-based approach.
• Analyze and investigate alerts generated by the transaction monitoring system arising from fiat money (wire and non-wire) and crypto (on-chain and off-chain) trades, deposits and withdrawals with a view to mitigate risk exposure to the platform, and escalate real-time urgent alerts according to risk appetite.
• Assist the Manager Transaction Monitoring in building periodic specific and general reports providing analysis that identifies money laundering, terrorism financing and sanctions-related anomalies for the Chief Compliance Officer and relevant Product Managers.
• Work closely with other Bitfinex teams and peer AML Investigators in addressing fraud, money laundering, terrorism financing, and sanctions risks.
• Continuously develop your skill sets including the application of virtual currencies, documentation requirements, and account behavior analysis in the context of KYC/AML/CTF and Sanctions.
• Understand the framework of transaction monitoring rules on a risk-based approach and analyze and evaluate data needed to assess referrals of unusual transaction activities.
• Ensure that KYC/AML/CTF and Sanctions activities are observed at all times, address issues appropriately, and escalate matters to management as required.
• Identify and coordinate the implementation of process improvements relating to KYC/AML/CTF and Sanctions policies in conjunction with Bitfinex's Terms of Service as applicable.
• Perform initial assessment of referrals of unusual transaction activity.
• Report and analyze unusual documentation, information, queries, and transactions with the Manager Investigations and Transaction Monitoring.
• Adjust risk parameters to ensure exposure falls within the platform's risk appetite.
• Participate in applicable compliance training.
• Follow and implement KYC/AML/CTF and Sanctions-related policies, laws and regulations.
• Carry out cross-departmental communication when needed.
• Liaise with AML Analysts and users in respect of additional information required to verify the presence of money laundering or terrorism financing concerns.
• Undertake evaluation and communicate findings and decisions to respective case stream team leader; escalate and discuss with the Head of Investigations where required.

What you bring

• Experience in the compliance field within the industry.
• Fair understanding or ability to understand AML/KYC/CTF related policies, laws and regulations, including enhanced due diligence (CDD/EDD) and Sanctions.
• Basic knowledge of blockchain technology.
• Experience with a blockchain analytical or transaction monitoring tool such as Chainalysis, Elliptic, or TRM.
• A university degree.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to source and understand the content of documentation in various languages, types and forms.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy and consistency.
• Self-motivation and ability to take initiative.
• Proficient IT skills (Chrome, Open Search, Google Docs, Gmail, Word, Excel).
