Head of Design, Product Design

As Head of Design at BitGo, you lead the design team and own the company's shift toward becoming design-forward. You manage and mentor designers, own the design system, sit alongside the Chief Product Officer on business strategy, and carry your own design work. This is a player-coach role: you will ship design surfaces yourself alongside leading the team, starting at roughly 50% hands-on work.

What you'll do

• Own and ship your own design work across surfaces-discovery through spec, in Figma, through reviews, and on hard problems-setting the quality bar you expect of everyone else
• Invest in each designer's growth individually, giving candid and specific feedback about craft, being explicit about what the next level requires, and respecting the autonomy they already have
• Amplify design's visibility, voice, and strategic impact across the company, representing design in strategy, roadmap, and architecture conversations
• Join product and engineering at discovery, not handoff, shaping long-term roadmaps so the team builds toward a direction rather than absorbing late changes
• Own the design system and component library end to end: tokens, patterns, governance, contribution model, and adoption across product teams
• Design the system, not the screen, working across seven product areas with shared primitives such as accounts, wallets, assets, entitlements, and approvals
• Establish UX and systems thinking as a practice the whole organization runs on, so product managers, engineers, and business leads can frame problems, map the systems they live in, and evaluate solutions against real client needs
• Establish processes a small team needs to move fast without losing quality: critique, documentation, design review, and clean handoffs with engineering
• Read technical designs, understand constraints, and decide with engineering where to compromise, where to hold, and where a broader change is worth the cost
• Represent BitGo design internally and externally with clients, partners, and candidates

What you bring

• Experience leading design in financial services, with digital assets or another domain of genuinely complex technical flows strongly preferred
• A track record building and owning a design system at scale, not just using one
• Hands-on proficiency in Figma and a commitment to craft, shipping design work today rather than describing work from years ago, with the ability to give specific, actionable feedback in critique
• Deep expertise in UX with strong product thinking, logical reasoning, and decisions grounded in data rather than taste
• Experience managing designers and making them better, caring about how the team is doing and not only what it ships
• Technical literacy, comfortable with APIs, data models, and engineering trade-offs
• Direct communication, able to hold a position with a Chief Product Officer, engineering lead, or client, and change your mind when the argument is better
• The desire to turn a technical, compliance-heavy platform into a design-led one, seeing this mandate as the appeal rather than the obstacle

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated environments such as a broker-dealer, trust company, bank, or qualified custodian
• Experience with complex permissioning, approval workflows, or multi-entity account structures
• Design leadership at a company that went through the same shift you would lead here
