Head of Design, Product Design

As Head of Design at BitGo, you lead and mentor a small, senior design team while carrying your own design work. You sit alongside the Chief Product Officer on business strategy and own the design system. BitGo is not a design-forward company today, and you will lead the shift to make it one. This is a player-coach role: expect roughly 50% hands-on individual contribution work initially, decreasing as the team scales, but never reaching zero.

What you'll do

• Own and ship design work directly across surfaces, from discovery through spec in Figma, design reviews, and solving hard problems
• Invest in each designer individually, being explicit about what the next level requires and providing work that gets them there, with candid and craft-focused feedback
• Amplify design's visibility, voice, and strategic impact by representing design in strategy, roadmap, and architecture conversations, and advocating for client experience
• Join product and engineering at discovery, not handoff, and shape long-term roadmaps so the team builds toward a direction instead of absorbing late changes
• Own the design system and component library end to end: tokens, patterns, governance, contribution model, and adoption across product teams
• Design the systems, not just screens, translating company strategy into a system flexible enough for teams to ship scalable experiences across seven product areas with shared primitives like accounts, wallets, assets, entitlements, and approvals
• Establish UX and systems thinking as a practice the whole organization runs on, enabling product managers, engineers, and business leads to frame client problems, map systems, and evaluate solutions
• Establish the processes a small team needs to move fast without losing quality: critique, documentation, design review, and clean handoffs with engineering
• Read technical designs, understand constraints, and decide with engineering where to compromise, hold, or pursue broader changes
• Be the internal face of design and represent BitGo design externally with clients, partners, and candidates

What you bring

• Experience leading design in financial services, with digital assets or another domain of genuinely complex technical flows strongly preferred
• A track record building and owning a design system at scale, not just using one
• Hands-on proficiency in Figma and a demonstrated ability to ship design work today, not just describe work from years ago
• Deep UX expertise with strong product thinking, logical reasoning, and decisions grounded in data
• Experience managing designers and making them better, with genuine care for team wellbeing alongside output
• Technical literacy with comfort around APIs, data models, and engineering trade-offs
• Direct communication skills, able to hold a position with a Chief Product Officer, engineering lead, or client, and change your mind when the argument is better
• A desire for the mandate: turning a technical, compliance-heavy platform into a design-led one should appeal to you, not intimidate you

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated environments such as broker-dealer, trust company, bank, or qualified custodian
• Experience with complex permissioning, approval workflows, or multi-entity account structures
• Design leadership at a company that went through a similar shift to the one you would lead here
