District Partners is building a financial crime operations team in Lisbon to support a major cryptocurrency exchange. You will investigate alerts generated by customer and transaction monitoring systems, trace funds on-chain and off-chain, decide whether activity is explained, needs escalation, or warrants a suspicious activity report, and maintain audit-ready case files. We are hiring at several levels: hands-on investigators, quality reviewers, team leads, and an operations manager.
What you'll do
- Investigate crypto deposits, withdrawals, transfers, fiat funding, and account behavior using KYC/CDD/EDD data, transaction histories, internal records, and open-source intelligence
- Trace funds on-chain with tools such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs, or Elliptic, and match that activity to off-chain customer records
- Spot digital-asset typologies, including layering, structuring, chain hopping, mixers, high-risk exchanges, scams and fraud, ransomware, darknet markets, mule activity, and sanctions exposure
- Check customer activity against expected behavior, source of funds and wealth, geography, and transaction history
- Decide outcomes: close cases, escalate, refer to sanctions or fraud teams, or recommend a suspicious activity report
- Produce concise, fact-based, audit-ready case documentation
- Raise emerging typologies, linked accounts, and control gaps with compliance leadership
- Work in a production environment with defined quality, productivity, and regulatory deadlines
What you bring
- Experience in AML transaction monitoring or suspicious activity investigations at a bank, fintech, payment company, or crypto exchange (2+ years for Investigator; 3+ years for Quality Control Analyst; 5+ years including 2+ years leading or reviewing analysts for Team Lead; 7+ years including 3+ years managing leads or supervisors for Operations Manager)
- Practical knowledge of crypto transaction flows: wallets, addresses, transaction hashes, centralized and decentralized exchanges, stablecoins, bridges, and smart contracts
- Hands-on experience with blockchain analytics or wallet-screening platforms
- Working knowledge of AML, CDD/EDD, sanctions, and suspicious activity reporting obligations, including US frameworks (BSA, FinCEN, OFAC)
- Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple cases or priorities against deadlines
- Strong written and spoken English, with the ability to explain complex transaction activity clearly
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Nice to have
- Investigation experience at a crypto exchange or other virtual asset service provider
- Chainalysis experience (strongly preferred)
- Experience with account takeovers, fraud proceeds, ransomware, or darknet investigations
- ACAMS, CFCS, CCI, CCAS, or Chainalysis certification
- For leadership roles: experience with training, calibration, procedure updates, audits, or regulatory inquiries
